HOT-COCOA SHOW! While Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” is wowing audiences it’s also kicked up a conversation about the role of Motion Capture in movies and if it should be considered Live-Action or Animation. We’ve talked about mo-cap on the podcast but this time I decided to do my research on the path that the technology has taken over the years and how it relates to the distinction in what the final product is called and broke it all down the way only we do on the RubberOnion Animation Podcast! I’d love to hear your thoughts (preferably after you listen to the show haha) in the comments section below. Enjoy the show, and check out the companion blog post on this topic!

SEGMENT EPISODE! It has been 2 full months since our last one of these so if you don’t remember, these are explicit episodes… thar be swears! And there’s kind of a lot to swear about. The Fine Brothers really pissed off the internet last week when they tried to trademark “React” for title use, and Marvel yanked fanimation series “X-Men: Danger Room Protocols.” On the fun side, Robert Valley finished animation on his animated short film “Pear Cider and Cigarettes” and is using Kickstarted to finish post-production, but what we’ve seen so far looks awesome. We talk about all the trailers we missed in our time away from animation news discussion, our first animation battle has concluded and was awesome, and we return for RAPID FIRE! Enjoy the show

While there weren’t a lot of media type animation stories (except for The Good Dinosaur trailer which is covered), that didn’t stop this episode from turning into one of the more interesting ones filled will discussions over the roll cartoons play in a child’s development, the nature of copyright in the internet age, why the Surface Pro 4 is a sign that Microsoft is doing more for the creatives of today than Apple… oh and there’s an Emoji movie being developed… which ALSO turned into an interesting discussion over public domain stories! We also field a question about if these two 2D (hand-drawn) animators would/will ever dabble in 3D (computer modeling). Enjoy the last week of “Stephen’s traveling audio” because next week I’ll be back in the office and I’ll be crystal clear!

PHOENIX, Arizona- Floating Gardens announced today that the largest aquaponics farm in the country will be entirely crowd funded. With an unreleased location near Phoenix the company boasts that the use of aquaponics will allow up to 200,000 pounds of food production on a one acre plot every year with only 2% of the water consumption when compared to a traditional farm, saving the state and its residents almost 1.8 million gallons of water per year.

“We are beyond excited! It’s not every day you see this kind of response” – said Floating Gardens CEO, Blake Yerian.

The organic farm plans to work with researchers from the University of Arizona to promote the use of aquaponic technology for backyard use for Americans of all ages. The farm plans to grow over a dozen products that have surged in price for Arizona residents in an effort to provide a lower price point than organic farms thousands of miles away.

What Is Floating Gardens

Floating Gardens is dedicated to utilizing one of nature’s most amazing processes for the benefit of the local community by providing affordable organic food as well as ongoing education to those interested in growing at home. With an entirely closed loop ecosystem, Floating Gardens is able to boast one of the most sustainable farming operations in the world. Below is more information on this amazing new campaign and how you can Get Involved Today!

What the heck is Aquaponics?!

Aquaponics is a food production system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. This allows the water that would be wasted, and flushed away, in both systems to be recycled and provide nutrients to plants through fish waste.

Why Floating Gardens

Floating Gardens will build the largest aquaponics farm in the United States, providing full access to its patrons as well as education for the community. Its customers can see exactly where and how their food is grown. With placement directly adjacent to the customer, Floating Gardens will eliminate the need for transportation costs and their impact on the environment.

Where Will It Be?

Floating Gardens is proud to call Arizona its first home and plans on expanding nationwide after its pilot farm, the largest of its kind in the U.S..

Don’t forget to donate today on the official GoFundMe page here and check out their social media below:

Great mobile apps for street art enthusiasts

Christoph Hitz No Credit

Mobile gadgets have revolutionized not just the tech market, but how we go about our lives as well. As we become increasingly dependent on these devices that promise us convenient direct access to all sorts of services, companies are finding it more imperative to adopt online personas lest they get left behind in the proverbial dust.

Mobile Lifestyle

In a survey by comScore, more than 68% of mobile users make use of Amazon’s apps to purchase various goods, contributing largely to the company’s total revenue of $74.75 billion in 2013. On the entertainment front, mobile gaming apps are also redefining the video game industry. Online game developer Dragonfish Tech – whose titles are staples on gaming site Total Gold – is a pioneer in helping clients enter new markets through its practicall solutions. Gaming on mobile devices is now a very big thing, which is why developers are always scrambling for ways to reach new audiences.

Digital Street Art

Enthusiasts of the artistic expression afforded by graffiti definitely aren’t left wanting in this new environment. One of the more interesting apps for this market niche is Geo Street Art. It’s a nifty little program that constantly updates you with the latest tags painted by notable street artists. Even better, it utilizes your gadget’s GPS tracker to help you locate particular masterpieces. And of course, sharing great finds with your friends through social media channels is just a button press away.

About the only drawback is that at the moment, you’d have to be living in New York to be able to use it. That being said, the way it marries graffiti appreciation with functions expected of current apps is nothing short of excellent.

If you’re an aspiring graffiti artist, you could get a feel for the craft (or at least, the look of it) with Fotofitti. It’s an app that lets you manipulate existing photos and “graffiti-ize” them through various filter effects and digital spraypaints.

And for something more frivolous but no less fun, FAILE Puzzle Boxes is guaranteed to entertain you. It lets you solve sliding tile puzzles that depict graffiti from the famed Brooklyn duo. It’s a diversionary app more than anything else, but it’s highly enjoyable just the same.

There are certainly more apps out there that cater to street art aficionados. All you have to do is find ‘em, tag ‘em, and get ‘em running on your smartphones and tablets.
