The Sunroom Project Space in the Glyndor Gallery at Wave Hill opened the spring/summer season with an amazing serie
s of exhibitions. Wave Hill annually commissions artists to create new work and site specific installations for this space. To celebrate the Sunroom Project Space’s 10th anniversary, Wave Hill curator of Visual Art Gabriel de Guzman and Director of Arts and Senior Curator Jennifer McGregor, thought to make a call for proposals to 60 artists recommended by other art professional in the art world. Borinquen Gallo (April 8–May 21), David Rios Ferreira (July 16–Aug 27), Jan Mun (July 16–Aug 27), Sindy Butz ( May 27–July 9), Sonya Blesofsky (May 27–July 9 ) were the five finalists chosen for the occasion.
Borinquen Gallo
Borinquen Gallo’s Be(e) Sanctuary, a site specific installation inspired by Wave Hill beehives and crafted out caution tape woven through debris netting, kicked off the series and was on view from April 8th to May 21st. The installation lined the walls of the room transforming the room into an enveloping space reminiscent of the beehive form. The caution tape, meticulously woven through the grid of the netting we usually see on exterior scaffolding, became a kaleidoscopic black and yellow abstract patterned quilt- like surface of varying textures, while cocoon like hanging structures housed live photo plants. Partially woven with the help of community members, the piece functioned as a metaphor for collaboration while pointing to the need to care for both the natural and social fabric of our environment.
Related programming included:
on April 22nd and 23rd, a series of workshops with the Wave Hill Family Project, during which the artist shared her art practice with an intergenerational audience. Participants had the opportunity to engage with recycled materials and partake in the project by making their own creations to either take home, to help disseminate environmental awareness, or contribute to the installation.
On Mat 6th, a Meet the Artist Event moderated by Kendal Henry, director of the Percent for Art Program at the
NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. The discussion contextualized the work in light of past and future works and most notably, in relation to Gallo’s upcoming (2019) Percent for Art Commission for the 40th Precinct Station House in the Bronx.
