Comic Con was this weekend and we try to cover the MANY stories that came from that: trailers, movie/series announcements, crossover comics, etc. Not to mention the stories that came out during the week not linked to the event like Harry Shearer coming back to “The Simpsons.” I’m also still on the road, so I’ve left Rob back in NY for a trip out to the IL where I am recording with Pat in his house… or as Rob like’s to call it, “The Ryan’s Den!” It’s a pretty energetic episode this week so enjoy the excitement — I hope it’s contagious.

This week we have a special interview with animator Robb Pratt (“Superman Classic,” “Flash Gordon Classic”). We talked about how and why he started the Classic series, his thoughts on Superman as a character, Flash Gordon and how he relates to Star Wars, various trials and tribulations navigating the business world of animation entertainment, his recent work on “Wabbit” (the Bugs Bunny animated shorts show) and his absolute love of story and art! Robb was very generous with his time and couldn’t have been more fun to talk to. In particular, I loved his insights into the character relation between Bugs Bunny and Superman, the analysis of the Rancor pit scene from “Return of the Jedi” and how he got that creepy voice effect in “Bizarro Classic.” Check out his YOUTUBE CHANNEL, WEBSITE and TWITTER for all things Robb Pratt!

Look!  Behind your walls!  Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to keep your home from leaking heat in a cold Minnesota winter, also able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! It’s a bird, it’s some insulation….it’s SUPERMAN!  No shit, the first appearance of Superman in 1938’s Action Comics no.1 (AKA, the RAREST COMIC BOOK EVER) was found behind a guy’s wall while renovating.

According to an article on Gawker a man named David Gonzalez bought a ten thousand dollar house in Minnesota, and when he was doing some repairs to a wall which had been lined with old newspapers, he stumbled upon the MOST VALUABLE COMIC BOOK in existence being used as insulation.

Up until this point there have only been a few prized copies of this book still surviving in the world (estimated 50- 100 copies), the most highly prized and graded is the nearly pristine copy actor Nicholas Cage sold at auction for $2,161,000 in 2011.

Finding this comic in your wall is the comic book equivalent of finding the lost da Vinci.

The article goes on to mention that he’s now selling it at auction online and the bidding is over 100 thousand dollars and rising, and that it would have been worth a lot more if his in-laws hadn’t accidentally ripped it in an argument, decreasing the value of the book by $75,000.

“They got all excited and tried to take it,” Gonzalez told the Star Tribune. “I understand it’s something cool, but told them: ‘You don’t have to act so rude. I brought you in to show you, don’t grab it.'”

That’s one motherfuckin’ expensive game of tug-o-war.

NYC, NY- March 20 – 24, 2013

For four days only, It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman has good ol’ ace reporter Clark Kent packing his blue tights and coming to NYC with Encores at The New York City Center.  The play is based on the original comic strip “Superman” and stars Edward Watts.  It opens this week (Wednesday, March 20 – Sunday, March 24).

Spider-Man, and Superman playing in the same city, WTF?!

Who ever thought Superheros and Disney characters would take over the great white way?!

This show looks kind of weird, it is a musical from the late 60s about a comic strip from the 30s, but set in the MAD MEN era of the 60s.  How could it not be weird as shit?    It’s not scored by Bono and U2 like Spider-Man, in other words.

Think campy, think the Adam West Batman, if him and Burt Ward were also singing and dancing.  Now you are getting the picture.

New York City Center is a 2,750-seat Moorish Revival theater located at 131 West 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues in Manhattan, New York City. It is one block south of Carnegie Hall.
