HOT COCOA SHOW! This week we talk all about Copyright, Fair Use, Parody, Fan Art and more in a discussion that’s centered around a blog post I made on the topic a couple days ago (click here to check that would which ALSO has this episode embedded in it for good measure)! Creators on the internet mostly get the blame for using and sometimes abusing copyrighted material in their own creations. Sometimes they constitute something new and other times they’re not at all covered under fair use and are basically just stealing, whether intentional or not. As pointed out early in the show, ignorance is not a defense against copyright infringement. However! “Internet creators” are not unique in this area, there’s just a lot more artists sharing their work now than there used to be… and much of that work is the exploratory stuff nobody ever used to be privy to in the pre-internet age.

Because the copyright has been extended to such a degree that more of the art which is actually still relevant in our time is copyrighted (proportionate to in the past when the copyright term was much shorter), the risk of stepping into legal quicksand is actually even more probable now. More creators, being seen earlier in their careers than ever before, in a time of extended copyright on the pop culture that itself is uniquely used as a cultural reference point of expression… that’s complicated!! I aim to make things clearer for you by making it clearer for my co-host Rob in this episode of the podcast and help further in the companion blog post which I encourage you to check out.

Listen for The Blob Blog, what started the hipsters hypothesis, “that’s pathetic, bro” and Happy Birthday!

The Emmys happened! They’re a thing! We talk about the winners and our love for “Bob’s Burgers” as well as the Every Simpsons Ever marathon happening on FXX (whatever THAT channel is…). The great Lord/Sir/Mr. Amazing Richard Attenborough passed away and we honor him, but then he honors us right back by giving us maybe the greatest transition we’ve ever done (divined through Pat, who’s back this episode)! And don’t say we never did anything for you, because we read another email exchange between a major company asking for free work and an artist who just won’t take it anymore (emphasis mine)!

Another Mickey Mouse short was released by Disney, this time in English, and taking place in NY no less. New York Weenie is the closest thing to gross-out Ren & Stimpy, John Kricfalusi style animation I’ve seen in years, and it’s by DISNEY! And it’s using their MOST BRANDED CHARACTER!

Far more over-the-top than their last Mickey short yet not as over the top as that crazy floor slap gif from the colorized Mickey’s Choo Choo cartoon from 1929 (the era these new cartoons are harkening back to.

They have loosened their reigns on the mouse, and are allowing him to be more compromised and unhinged than we have ever seen him. SEE VIDEO HERE (NOT YET ON YOUTUBE). This is a risk most giant corporations don’t usually take with their cash cow, but this is a new era of Disney Mickey shorts.

It’s surreal for Disney to be let’s say “Paying an homage” to Ren & Stimpy, considering the linage of both cartoons.Mickey is getting frustrated with hot dog.

It’s rare that you see a decent Disney cartoon featuring Mickey Mouse that isn’t 50+ years-old (in fact Disney has only released three since 1980), but this newly released Mickey Mouse and Friends animated french short Croissant de Triomphe is pretty sweet, and unlike anything we’ve seen before in the Mickey canon. It’s done in what looks like a cross between Flash Animation, Anime, Ren & Stimpy, and Babar.

The video is available to watch streaming on Disney’s Website Here.

(((SPOILERS))) In it a distressed Minnie Mouse is in a jam when her Parisian cafe runs out of Croissants. She (in French mind you) puts a call out to Daisy Duck, who contacts Mickey and sends him on a “Mouse Hunt” for Croissants (which are apparently hard to find in Paris).

To make quick time he hops on an anthropomorphic Vespa, which is like the G rated version of Benny from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and although it is small enough to navigate through traffic, he opts for scaling buildings and cathedrals, crashing through museums, and disrupting a few key scenes from a few of our favorite Disney fairy tales.

In the end our hero of course saves the day after a few close calls, and the customers are surprisingly happy to chow down on second hand stolen Croissants. By second hand I mean taken from another person’s hand whom already paid for it and offering it for resale at retail, and by stolen I mean literally stolen from the hands of hungry children. Children who were about to eat breakfast pastries while riding a carrousel by a human sized mouse in a custom fit suit of armor riding a sentient Italian moped with a baguette for a lance in a twisted game of “ring-spearing” .

Again, you can take my word for it, or watch video now on Disney’s Website.

They really went retro with thick line, flat color, and something closer to Mickey’s original eyes. Here is a still frame gallery from The Art of Disney Animation’s Facebook.
