Adi Shankar Castlevania miniseries, Nintendo coming back to movies and Rovio cuts workforce by a third

We’re talking all Video Game related stories this week but start with a question: is “Animations” a word? Nintendo said they want more control over their movie properties, fan-film producer Adi Shankar (Judge Dredd: Superfiend, Power/Rangers) and Fred Seibert (Frederator) want to make a dark Castlevania animated mini-series, and Rovio cuts a third of their work force. This week we also play a game where Stephen reads out all the video game movies that have been made thus far and Rob and Pat try to guess what their Rotten Tomatoes rating is… I know this is cliche, but the answers may surprise you! The audience question this week is a great one about what animated series we would cancel in order to revive another.

Disney’s D23 Expo animated film presentations: Moana + Toy Story 4 + Finding Dory + Zootopia + more!

This weekend was Disney’s D23 Expo presentation so we discuss all the information that came out of that… live-action remakes, sequels, and the incredible line-up on Disney and Pixar animation film slate all the way to 2018! Stephen starts the show by giving a mini-review on the British re-dub of the Argentinian animated film “Metagol” (which in the UK is called “Unbeatables”), Rob tells a story about having poop on his shoe and Pat breaks some news. Then we’re off talking about how Furries love Zootopia, why Cars 2 might get too much hate, if Donald Trump was producing the upcoming Dia de los Muertos inspired Pixar movie “Coco” and the problem with trying to make the “definitive” version of a fairy tale. Chris Farley SHREK early story reel surfaces, Windows 10 released, and a new D&D movie announced

We finally got to see what Chris Farley’s SHREK would’ve been like in an early story reel which surfaced this week. His passing in 1997 was a big shock to us so there’s a lot of discussion surrounding this topic this week. But that’s not all because there’s a “Bob the Builder” reboot with a new character design who looks… symmetrical, a new Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show coming to Netflix which is 2D (!) and the rights have been secured to make a Dungeons & Dragons movie. That last story also contains the skit this week is Stephen reading excerpts from Ice-T’s description of his experience recording the D&D audio book (starting at 1:03:24)… so enjoy that! There are technical discussions as well surrounding the new Windows 10 and a blog post which tried (and failed) to properly compare the budgets of live-action VFX to that of fully CG Animated Films. The questions this week comes from a listener wondering if we’re going to CTNx this year, which ticket we bought, and if that’s right for her. The Good Dinosaur trailer, Fat cartoon characters inspire overeating, and Sony making an Emoji movie

While there weren’t a lot of media type animation stories (except for The Good Dinosaur trailer which is covered), that didn’t stop this episode from turning into one of the more interesting ones filled will discussions over the roll cartoons play in a child’s development, the nature of copyright in the internet age, why the Surface Pro 4 is a sign that Microsoft is doing more for the creatives of today than Apple… oh and there’s an Emoji movie being developed… which ALSO turned into an interesting discussion over public domain stories! We also field a question about if these two 2D (hand-drawn) animators would/will ever dabble in 3D (computer modeling). Robb Pratt Interview – Animator behind Superman and Flash Gordon Classic talks cartoons, career and superheroes!

This week we have a special interview with animator Robb Pratt (“Superman Classic,” “Flash Gordon Classic”). We talked about how and why he started the Classic series, his thoughts on Superman as a character, Flash Gordon and how he relates to Star Wars, various trials and tribulations navigating the business world of animation entertainment, his recent work on “Wabbit” (the Bugs Bunny animated shorts show) and his absolute love of story and art! Animated short “KLAUS” looks like CGI but is hand-drawn animation

An animated bomb called “Klaus” was dropped on the community this week screaming that hand-drawn animation can visually compete with CG in today’s climate. And then the creator, Sergio Pablos, says that he’ll talk about the techniques used to create the short trailer at an Annecy talk. That’s about as close to a mic-drop as we get in the animation field… so we talk about it… a lot! Other stories include Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” teaser, Mega Man getting a TV show, Disney adapting another animation into live-action and a bunch more actually (which is why this episode is almost 2.5hrs long)! There aren’t many main stories this week because of the high likelyhood of fakery (April Fools was a few days before this recording). But what we DO have was completely submitted by you listeners so thanks for the help! Disney is making another live-action movie off one of their animation properties, Adam West and Burt Ward are Batman and Robin again, there was a music video directed by Sylvain Chomet, and the main conversation is about the difference between a “job” and a “career,” prompted by Will Finn’s blog post. The PIXELS trailer was the most popular conversation topic on the RubberOnion facebook page this week, so we lead with that. At the end we discuss the internet as a creative spawning ground and how traditional media fits in AS WELL AS addressing a question to me (Stephen) about being a freelance animator. Stephen and Rob talk about the tough subjects of foreign VFX subsidies and the troubles fighting them, the abrupt closing of PDI/Dreamworks Redwood City campus, and a Kickstarter campaign so ridiculously popular it brings up the topic of how democratic is the internet really. Speed round! Pat and Stephen had to get to trivia night because who else’s going to know what year Space Jam was released (ahem 1996)? We all watched the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover episode and have some words. Don Hertzfeldt’s Simpsons couch gag made people confused and intrigued.
