<div><strong>New York &#8211; Tuesday, February 4, 2014</strong></div>
<p>With just five days into the <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1351910088/3doodler-the-worlds-first-3d-printing-pen" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kickstarter</a> campaign, founders Maxwell Bogue, Daniel Cowen and Peter Dilworth got over $1.9 million in pledges and undoubtedly surpassed their goal of only $30,000&#8230; (you can see our initial report <a href="https://artiholics.com/2013/02/20/3d-printing-pen-takes-drawing-to-the-next-dimension" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a>).<ins><br />
</ins></p>
<p>So, what is the <a href="https://www.the3doodler.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">3Doodler</a> you might ask?</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6835" alt="pen" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/pen.jpeg" width="512" height="800" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/pen.jpeg 512w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/pen-192x300.jpeg 192w" sizes="(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px" /><br />
The 3Doodler is a pen which heats up plastic sticks and releases them.  Once the plastic comes out of the pen, it cools really quickly and solidifies into wherever you lead the pen!  This allows you to &#8220;draw in 3D&#8221;.</p>
<p>Brilliant!</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/doodle.png"><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6838" alt="doodle" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/doodle.png" width="800" height="600" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/doodle.png 800w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/doodle-300x225.png 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/doodle-220x165.png 220w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a></p>
<p>To develop such creative technology, it undeniably takes minds that are programmed to think outside of a box.</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/factory.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6840" alt="factory" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/factory.jpeg" width="530" height="800" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/factory.jpeg 530w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/factory-198x300.jpeg 198w" sizes="(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px" /></a></p>
<p>So, I got to ask the founders Maxwell, Daniel and Peter exactly how they did it:</p>
<p><em>What inspired you with the idea to create the 3Doodler pen?  How was it birthed?</em></p>
<p>The idea came about as we frequently use our own 3D printers for rapid prototyping.  We wanted to see if the process could be sped up and made &#8220;freer&#8221; by placing the parts of the 3D printer in a pen form.  The first iteration was called the teacup, basically an extruder with a handle.  It worked horribly, but it did work.  The team then added to this, creating a unique cooling mechanism and evolving to the 3Doodler you see today.</p>
<p><em>Are you developing any new products?  If so, how do you find time to develop them?</em></p>
<p>Yes, we recently announced some new products at CES.  The first is a holder for the pen, which makes storing the 3Doodler in between doodling easier, while also doubling as a moveable platform to allow you to create larger structures with far less hassle.  3Doodler will also be launching the first in a series of changeable nozzles, allowing users to extrude plastic in different shapes and sizes; as well as DoodleBlocks™; silicon molds that can be easily “filled in” with the ABS or PLA plastic from the pen.  The molds come in various shapes including stars, numbers, and letters, making it effortless to create perfectly shaped objects.</p>
<p><em>What were your biggest challenges leading up to the launch of the 3Doodler?  And any advice to our readers with product ideas of their own?</em></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Prepare, prepare, prepare.  If you think you have something that could get very big, I’d recommend reaching out to media before the launch.  The idea that you can just throw it up there and see how it does might work for smaller projects, but for something really big, you need to reach out.  Logistics are important as well – you need an idea or a basic plan for how you’re going to deal with the craziness.  If you’re thinking of launching on Kickstarter, talking to a Kickstarter veteran is helpful as well.  I spoke to Joe Schlesinger (of <a href="https://arcbotics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Arcbotics</a>) a lot about the pitfalls he hit with Kickstarter. You’re going to get a ton of emails.  My girlfriend took a few weeks off from work, just to help us answer them.  We had some amazing help to strategize and execute the whole campaign.  In short: it’s really important to prepare completely – have exactly the right hands and brains on deck.  </span>There aren&#8217;t really any negative points about our Kickstarter experience &#8211; but if we were to give advice for those considering it, we&#8217;d say be prepared for the amount of emails and publicity, and try and get back to all enquiries if you can!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Each year at this time I make the trip to my childhood home and stare at a refrigerator full of <a href="https://artiholics.com/2013/04/10/walmart-sears-shutter-in-store-portrait-studio-departments/">holiday cards</a> from distant relatives and old family friends. Many of these cards include an annual photo, each year the same people in the same configuration, in front of the same fireplace, or a new vacation location. In the spirit of the season, here are fifteen artworld family photos.</p>
<h1>Merry Christmas from the Impressionists</h1>
<p><strong>1.</strong> Above is the painting <em>A Studio in the Batignolles </em>by Henri Fantin-Latour. This image depicts a bunch of the French Impressionists, including Manet, Renoir, Monet, and the critic Emile Zola. An oil painting of an artist&#8217;s friends and colleagues that probably took weeks to complete really makes you appreciate the immediacy of Instagram.</p>

<h1>Let It Snow, the Futurists</h1>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/tunisbanquet-e1347631495880.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6438" alt="" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/tunisbanquet-e1347631495880.jpg" width="500" height="462" /></a><strong>2.</strong> This is a Futurist banquet in Tunis with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, author of the <a href="https://vserver1.cscs.lsa.umich.edu/~crshalizi/T4PM/futurist-manifesto.html" target="_blank">Futurist Manifesto</a>, front and center. <small>(<a href="https://www.theawl.com/2012/09/the-futurist-cookbook" target="_blank">image via</a>)</small></p>
<h1>Winter Greetings, The Ashcan School</h1>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Sloan_Studio.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6452" alt="Sloan_Studio" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Sloan_Studio.jpg" width="800" height="586" /></a><strong>3.</strong> Here we have the Ashcan School artists at the painter John French Sloan&#8217;s Philadelphia Studio in 1898. The original &#8220;Philadelphia Five,&#8221; included the great American artists George Bellows and Edward Hopper, among others. <small>(<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashcan_School" target="_blank">image via</a>)</small></p>

<h1>Spreading Holiday Cheer, the Stieglitz&#8217;s</h1>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/tumblr_lblt4hMAG01qarrqqo1_500.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6446" alt="tumblr_lblt4hMAG01qarrqqo1_500" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/tumblr_lblt4hMAG01qarrqqo1_500.jpg" width="500" height="330" /></a><strong>4.</strong> Meanwhile, over in New York is the Steiglitz Circle. This is an early photo, so Alfred is in there, but not Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe or Arthur Dove.  <small>(<a href="https://edwardianera.tumblr.com/page/44" target="_blank">image via</a>)</small></p>
<h1>Peace, Love &amp; Joy from Weimar</h1>

Pictured here are some of the movements’ heavy hitters like Theo van Doesburg in the middle with his makeshift hat, El Lissitsky, Tristan Tzara, Hans Arp, and Hans Richter. <small>(<a href="https://chagalov.tumblr.com/post/1210181428/the-meeting-of-constructivists-and-dadaists-in" target="_blank">image via</a>)</small></p>

Here they are with architect Albert Khan. <small>(<a href="https://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/images/detail/albert-kahn-frida-kahlo-and-diego-rivera-6348" target="_blank">image via</a>)</small></p>

An advertisement for what, exactly? Well I&#8217;m not quite sure other than that these Christie&#8217;s staff are serious, they have names, and they sure seem to like hanging around on installation equipment. It mostly bums me out, thinking about the art handlers who had to unpack, move, place, and then re-crate those big Basquiat and Mark Grotjahn paintings in the background for this casual photoshoot. <small>(image &#8211; author scan from Art In America November 2013)</small></p>

<div>Channeling the grace, technique and voices of Old Masters, their souls are left whispering in the air as they&#8217;re brought to life in the drawings created by the delicate hands of Steven Assael.</div>

<div></div>
<div>Steven Assael is known in America as one of the top representational figurative artists who marvelously captures intimate psychological portraits in fine detail. Every piece has its own story to tell as a human image is captured in moments of stillness and muted scenes.</div>
<div></div>

<div></div>
<div>A realist, Assael works from life and is selective in the way he represents a human figure.</div>
<div></div>
<div><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-23-at-10.29.50-AM.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5917" alt="Screen Shot 2013-11-23 at 10.29.50 AM" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-23-at-10.29.50-AM.png" width="350" height="447" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-23-at-10.29.50-AM.png 350w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-23-at-10.29.50-AM-234x300.png 234w" sizes="(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px" /></a></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-23-at-12.01.20-PM.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5918" alt="Screen Shot 2013-11-23 at 12.01.20 PM" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-23-at-12.01.20-PM.png" width="626" height="565" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-23-at-12.01.20-PM.png 626w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Screen-Shot-2013-11-23-at-12.01.20-PM-300x270.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px" /></a></div>
<div></div>
<div>Allowing the pencil to drift into essential lines, this organic detail gives a spaciousness and a haunting tonality to his pieces.</div>
<div></div>
<div><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Bride-with-Cards-graphite-and-crayon.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5911" alt="Bride with Cards - graphite and crayon" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Bride-with-Cards-graphite-and-crayon.png" width="349" height="447" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Bride-with-Cards-graphite-and-crayon.png 349w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Bride-with-Cards-graphite-and-crayon-234x300.png 234w" sizes="(max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px" /></a></div>
<div></div>
<div>It was astounding to witness the individuality he managed to capture in each of his portraits.  The eyes possess a distinct personality, even in the most complex expression.</div>
<div></div>
<div><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_8060.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5913" alt="IMG_8060" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_8060.jpg" width="2352" height="2688" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_8060.jpg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_8060-262x300.jpg 262w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_8060-896x1024.jpg 896w" sizes="(max-width: 2352px) 100vw, 2352px" /></a></div>
<div></div>
<div>Assael has fine-tuned an incredible technique that really warrants one to look up close at the technicality.  Using graphite and crayon, he is able to capture exceptionally intricate detail, tasteful space, unique personalities and a mastery in his craft.</div>
<div></div>

<div>New York City, NY &#8211; Monday, November 11, 2013</div>
<p><div></div>
<div><i>&#8220;Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.&#8221;  Rene Magritte</i></div>
<div></div>
<p><div>So, words of gossip trickled into my ear and I decided to check out <a href="https://www.moma.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Museum of Modern Art</a> (MoMA) on a deliciously cold Friday evening (for those of you who don&#8217;t know: MoMA is <a href="https://www.moma.org/visit/plan/offers#admission" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">free on Fridays</a> from 4-8pm).  The queue was enormous, but, in true theme for the night&#8230; &#8220;things aren&#8217;t always what they seem&#8221;.  The line moved <i>very</i> quickly and the moment I stepped in, I raced up the escalators to see the exhibition of one of my artistic idols, Rene Magritte&#8230;</div>
<p>
<a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/magritte-title.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/magritte-title.jpg" alt="magritte title" width="960" height="676" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5709" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/magritte-title.jpg 960w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/magritte-title-300x211.jpg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/magritte-title-50x35.jpg 50w" sizes="(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /></a></p>
<div></div>
<div>&#8230;Only to be greeted by another line, the anticipation kept building.  When I was finally able to step in, I milked every second I could get.  Known for his thought-provoking surrealist works, Rene Magritte, a legendary Belgian artist who indulges in mystery and illusion, took the floor.</div>
<div></div>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Attempting-the-Impossible1928.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Attempting-the-Impossible1928.jpeg" alt="Attempting the Impossible1928" width="1400" height="2004" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5722" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Attempting-the-Impossible1928.jpeg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Attempting-the-Impossible1928-209x300.jpeg 209w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Attempting-the-Impossible1928-715x1024.jpeg 715w" sizes="(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px" /></a></p>
<p><div>I was a fan since high school, so, seeing a collection of nearly a hundred works was particularly illuminating. Magritte got his start as a commercial artist in the advertising industry.  It was here, that he developed a flair for utilizing &#8220;text&#8221; in his work, among other stylistic skill-sets.</div>
<div></div>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Palace-of-Curtains.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Palace-of-Curtains.jpeg" alt="The Palace of Curtains" width="1400" height="976" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5713" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Palace-of-Curtains.jpeg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Palace-of-Curtains-300x209.jpeg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Palace-of-Curtains-1024x713.jpeg 1024w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Palace-of-Curtains-50x35.jpeg 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px" /></a></p>
<p><div>As I walked through the room from painting to painting, I was able to visibly experience Magritte evolve as an artist.  From his earlier days and explorations, to his fully matured state as a master of unconventional reality, the build-up to seeing those final pieces was much more gratifying in this set-up.</div>
<div></div>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Rape1934.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Rape1934.jpeg" alt="The Rape1934" width="1400" height="1898" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5716" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Rape1934.jpeg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Rape1934-221x300.jpeg 221w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Rape1934-755x1024.jpeg 755w" sizes="(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px" /></a></p>
<p><div>Using his favorite techniques such as giving objects different names, mirroring, concealing and duplicating, Magritte had found a way to merge the themes of his life with techniques that impact viewers in the strongest way possible.</div>
<div></div>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/On-The-Threshold-of-Liberty.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/On-The-Threshold-of-Liberty.jpeg" alt="On The Threshold of Liberty" width="1400" height="1902" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5718" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/On-The-Threshold-of-Liberty.jpeg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/On-The-Threshold-of-Liberty-220x300.jpeg 220w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/On-The-Threshold-of-Liberty-753x1024.jpeg 753w" sizes="(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px" /></a></p>
<p><div>Focusing on showcasing familiar settings, Magritte removes a layer of the surface and makes the familiar, unfamiliar.</div>
<div></div>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Time-Transfixed1938.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Time-Transfixed1938.jpeg" alt="Time Transfixed1938" width="1400" height="2098" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5717" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Time-Transfixed1938.jpeg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Time-Transfixed1938-200x300.jpeg 200w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Time-Transfixed1938-683x1024.jpeg 683w" sizes="(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px" /></a><br />
<a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Portrait1935.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Portrait1935.jpeg" alt="The Portrait1935" width="1400" height="2047" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5719" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Portrait1935.jpeg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Portrait1935-205x300.jpeg 205w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/The-Portrait1935-700x1024.jpeg 700w" sizes="(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px" /></a></p>
<p><div>Everyday objects were displayed in a new way, challenging what we understand into mysterious associations, new perspectives and unusual takes of the usual.  I must have spent a solid twenty minutes on several pieces debating with a friend on the meaning behind the works.  This made the visit much more fulfilling.</div>
<div></div>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Clairvoyance.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Clairvoyance.jpeg" alt="Clairvoyance" width="1400" height="1163" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5714" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Clairvoyance.jpeg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Clairvoyance-300x249.jpeg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Clairvoyance-1024x850.jpeg 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px" /></a></p>
<p><div><a href="https://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1322">The Rene Magritte exhibition</a> at the MoMA wasn&#8217;t a fly-by situation, you really had to <i>look</i> and absorb the pieces, connect the dots, relate the titles, attach prior work thematics in order to understand the abstraction and appreciate Magritte.  Rene Magritte is filled with witty, distinguished artistry and something that I have always gravitated to: mystery.</div>
<div></div>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/moma2.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/moma2.jpg" alt="moma2" width="567" height="446" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5720" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/moma2.jpg 567w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/moma2-300x235.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px" /></a></p>
<p><div><i>&#8220;We must not fear daylight just because it almost always illuminates a miserable world.&#8221; &#8211; Rene Magritte</i></div>
<div><i> </i></div>
<div>The exhibit will be on display until January 12, 2014 on the 6th floor of <a href="https://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1322">The Museum of Modern Art</a>.</div>

<p><strong>Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey &#8211; </strong><strong>October 11, 2013–March 9, 2014 &#8211; A</strong><strong>t the Brooklyn Museum</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a title="Wangechi Mutu" href="https://www.wangechimutu.com" target="_blank">Wangechi Mutu</a>&#8216;s new show, <a title="A Fantastic Journey" href="https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/wangechi_mutu/" target="_blank">A Fantastic Journey</a>, is currently up, and it is beyond a feast for the eyes. One could search her name, and find a plethora of digital photographs of her collages, but to say you&#8217;ve really seen Mutu&#8217;s work, you need to see it in person. The saturation and dissipation of paint, with all the intricate combinations of pasted photographs, is hard to completely see on a computer screen.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">For those who are not familiar with her collage work, she renders the black female form with application of intensely innovative surface quality techniques, all along challenging those who use the term &#8220;exotic&#8221; to categorize a black woman. Perhaps the title, &#8220;A Fantastic Journey&#8221; comes from the visual voyage the viewer takes as they stumble across the hidden creatures, and varied patterns lying within a figure that has so many colors, that it brings a new meaning to the word, &#8220;colored woman.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft" alt="IMG_7739" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7739-300x200.jpg" width="300" height="200" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">She demonstrates a mastery of balance between ambience and rich, detailed content. The hidden treasures found within her work range from decontextualized elements of animal heads and limbs cut out from magazines, combined with violent red splatter reminiscent of blood massacres, to pornographic images, and machinery parts, all of which compose most often in her works, a slender female warrior.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Viewing these images from a fine artist perspective, she nails all they needs to make visually pleasing and evocative imagery within her collages. Nothing less than extraordinary intuitive placement, each pattern synergistically flows from one to the next. If an art student is running short of what mark to make next, it is urgent to see this show, because Mutu knows how to experiment with color and juxtaposition.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7726.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5652" alt="IMG_7726" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7726.jpg" width="3456" height="2304" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7726.jpg 1050w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7726-300x200.jpg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7726-1024x682.jpg 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 3456px) 100vw, 3456px" /></a>When and if you see Wangechi Mutu&#8217;s show at the Brooklyn Museum, on the fourth floor, I strongly suggest you actually appreciate it, and pause at each collage, considering the painstaking details, the sophisticated color choices, and those suggestions of gender, war, race, colonialism, global consumption, and science-fiction. Don&#8217;t breeze past them, because you will regret not being attentive to the wide range of visual language she has developed at and since her education at Cooper Union and Yale. Each of her collages has its own unique hook to allure the viewer into its clusters of warm polka dots, and black mold ornamentations curving to the contours of the figure, or the figure&#8217;s bulbous lips and wide nose.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7706.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-5657" alt="IMG_7706" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7706-1024x682.jpg" width="640" height="426" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7706-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7706-300x200.jpg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7706.jpg 1050w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Her collages were her strongest work. Mutu is known for her collages, but this show was also an opportunity for her to demonstrate her strength in video installation, and sculpture. Her video work touches upon how &#8220;wild&#8221; and &#8220;untamed&#8221; her black female characters are, as one of her videos displays the artist, herself, eating cake without utensils in a fancy white dress, in some outdoors environment. Her other video, which immerses you within its cinema-like presence, displays a woman with a giant attachment of mechanized, industrial forms, oozing, smoking, eating bats. Her video work recalls the attention to detail and conglomeration of content that her collage work does, but it also moves on-screen.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7731.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-5653" alt="IMG_7731" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7731-1024x682.jpg" width="640" height="426" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7731-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7731-300x200.jpg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7731.jpg 1050w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">She also installed trees made of multi-colored carpet throughout the exhibition space, and in another room (photo not included), she hung black plastic bags in tied hemp string from the ceiling. Her sculptures omitted the knowledge of color, tonality, and heavy-subject-matter-infused photographs. Her sculptures are simple, exploring the wrinkles the materials make. Her sculptures didn&#8217;t exploit the colors that people often associate with exotic fruits and flowers, but rather stuck with browns, grays, and earthy hues.<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-5655" alt="IMG_7732" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7732-682x1024.jpg" width="640" height="960" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7732-682x1024.jpg 682w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7732-200x300.jpg 200w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7732.jpg 1050w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Wangechi demonstrates her vast imagination, and attention to detail so vividly in her fiery, colorful collages, I was hoping to literally walk into one of her worlds, being able to touch the different textured forms, smell the body odor of one of her figures, or hell, even eat some exotic fruit off the branches of her installed trees. Her installations are shadowed by her collage work. Mutu seems to work liberally, without restraint in her collages, and she challenged herself with her sculptures. My hopes were not let down by seeing this show, but I wonder if in the future, her installation and immersive sculptural work will truly compete with the seductive nature of her collages and 2 dimensional work. She is certainly in her element on flat surfaces, but it seems apparent that she could further push her installation work.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7708.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-5654" alt="IMG_7708" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7708-1024x682.jpg" width="640" height="426" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7708-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7708-300x200.jpg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_7708.jpg 1050w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I have no doubt that this artist will continue to grow, and share her incredible gift with the world, especially through her 2-d work, but I&#8217;m still waiting for her sculptural work to grab me like her collages do.</p>

<p>I was fortunate to get a intimate sneak preview screening of <a href="https://www.herbanddorothy.com/">HERB &amp; DOROTHY 50&#215;50 </a>at the<a href="https://foursquare.com/v/seeme/4fd8e140e4b07d78f946c2e4"> SEE.ME gallery </a>last week.  This is the follow-up documentary to 2008&#8217;s award winning <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1227929/">HERB &amp;DOROTHY(add this to your que!)</a>.</p>
<p>The original documentary recounts the amazing story of a New York couple, Herb and Dorothy Vogel, who on a NYC postal worker and a librarian&#8217;s salary (her income went to expenses, his to buying art)  managed to amassed one of the largest collections of minimalist art ever, and fit it all in a one bedroom apartment .</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/9.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5448" alt="9" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/9.jpg" width="528" height="688" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/9.jpg 528w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/9-230x300.jpg 230w" sizes="(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px" /></a></p>
<p>In the original film <strong>SPOILER ALERT</strong> Herb &amp; Dorothy donated their collection to the Washington DC National Archive.  In the new film we catch up with the collecting duo and find that the archive didn&#8217;t  have room for the entire collection.  The accept  half of the work and for the other half they come up with a proposition.  A 50&#215;50 concept, to donate 50 pieces, to 50 museums- thus breaking up the massive collection into 50 separate collections.  <strong> 50 COLLECTIONS &#8211; ONE MUSEUM PER STATE &#8211;  FOR ALL 50 STATES!</strong><br />
<iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/eQ9iPGcY8DM?rel=0" height="318" width="566" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0"></iframe> View the Trailer.</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/41.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5445" alt="4" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/41.jpg" width="528" height="409" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/41.jpg 528w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/41-300x232.jpg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/41-220x170.jpg 220w" sizes="(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px" /></a>I got to see the film and then a Q &amp; A with Dorothy Vogel and the director Megumi Sasaki.</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/51.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5446" alt="5" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/51.jpg" width="528" height="688" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/51.jpg 528w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/51-230x300.jpg 230w" sizes="(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px" /></a> Director Megumi Sasaki fell in love with their story, and had to put it on film.  She succeeded.</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/7.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5447" alt="7" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/7.jpg" width="528" height="688" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/7.jpg 528w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/7-230x300.jpg 230w" sizes="(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px" /></a> Dorothy Vogel fielded multiple questions from the small audience at the screening.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The first film was about us building the collection, the second one is about how we gave it away.&#8221;</em> &#8211; Dorothy Vogel.</p></blockquote>
<p>I will write more about this experience next week on <a href="https://www.artsucks.com">ARTSUCKS.com</a>, with more photos and details and the questions  I asked, as well as her answers.  Until then I encourage you to see it, it opens today at the <a href="https://www.ifccenter.com/films/herb-dorothy-50x50/">IFC Center in Manhattan</a>.  The director will be there as well as some of the artists who are featured in the film including <strong>Christo</strong>, <strong>Charles Clough</strong>, and<strong> Martin Johnson</strong>.  On Saturday &amp; Sunday Dorothy will be there as well.  Here is a list of showtimes and in person appearances over this weekend at the IFC Center.</p>

<p>You too can appear on the cover of <a href="https://www.time.com/time/magazine‎/">Time</a>, if only as a reflection.  Today is your last chance, before the <a href="https://www.friezenewyork.com/‎">Frieze Art Fair New York </a>big top three ring circus packs up its tent and moves on.  The mirrors with the classic red time border and very &#8220;un-Time-like&#8221; colors and uncharacteristically outlined Time logos are works by contemporary Los Angeles based artist <a href="https://mungothomson.com/" target="_blank">Mungo Thomson</a> in the <a href="https://www.galeriefrankelbaz.com/‎" target="_blank">Galerie Frank Elbaz</a> (Paris, France) booth.</p>
<p>Apparently Mungo has been doing Time mirror <a href="https://www.santafenewmexican.com/pasatiempo/art/museum_shows/article_55f6d40e-7d42-11e2-a0da-001a4bcf6878.html" target="_blank">since at least the early 2000s </a>and it gets even more interesting if you put two of the Time mirrors across from one another with just a tripod filming, creating recursive reflection, or a &#8220;house-of-mirrors effect.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Screen-Shot-2013-05-13-at-7.40.28-AM.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3312" alt="Screen Shot 2013-05-13 at 7.40.28 AM" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Screen-Shot-2013-05-13-at-7.40.28-AM.png" width="572" height="755" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Screen-Shot-2013-05-13-at-7.40.28-AM.png 572w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Screen-Shot-2013-05-13-at-7.40.28-AM-227x300.png 227w" sizes="(max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px" /></a></p>
<blockquote><p>Mungo Thomson: <em>June 25, 2001 (How the Universe Will End)</em> and (reflected) <em>March 6, 1995 (When Did the Universe Begin?)</em>, 2012, enamel on low-iron mirror with poplar and anodized aluminum; courtesy the artist and SITE Santa Fe  <small>[<a href="https://www.santafenewmexican.com/pasatiempo/art/museum_shows/article_55f6d40e-7d42-11e2-a0da-001a4bcf6878.html?mode=image&amp;photo=1" target="_blank">From an article on SantafeNewMexican.com</a>]</small></p></blockquote>
<p>There were a lot of mirrored and high-polish pieces of art in all of the art fairs this year, <a href="https://artiholics.com/2013/03/07/armory-week-2013-trend-spotting/">a trend I should have picked up on it earlier</a>.</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/12.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3308" alt="1" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/12.jpg" width="637" height="850" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/12.jpg 637w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/12-224x300.jpg 224w" sizes="(max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px" /></a></p>
<p>People before me were taking a picture of themselves in the cover, and people after me as well.  This must have been a constant flow of photos, as everybody has a camera phone, if not a camera, and you don&#8217;t get many opportunities to shoot yourself in a full body mirror in the middle of an art fair.</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/21.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3309" alt="2" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/21.jpg" width="637" height="850" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/21.jpg 637w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/21-224x300.jpg 224w" sizes="(max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px" /></a></p>
<p>Knowing that since I was here by myself this would be the only photo of me at Frieze, I took a few to make sure I got a decent one.<a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/3.jpg"><br />
</a></p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/3.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3310" alt="3" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/3.jpg" width="756" height="529" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/3.jpg 756w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/3-300x209.jpg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/3-50x35.jpg 50w" sizes="(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px" /></a></p>
<p>The work wasn&#8217;t labeled, but the curator was nice enough to write the artist&#8217;s name down on their business card for me.  You can see behind it a guy is taking a picture of himself with an iPad.  The weird thing about taking a picture of yourself with an iPad in the mirror is that the apple logo will be reversed.</p>
<p>Oddly enough, I have actually had a <a href="https://artsucks.com/blog/2010/may10/timefacebook-5-23-10.php" target="_blank">self portrait printed in the real Time Magazine</a> because I thought it would be a fun thing to do.</p>

<p>One of the weird, and strange realities about conceptual art is that sometimes it needs to somewhat be explained to the viewer, in order to fully convey what&#8217;s going on in the piece.</p>
<p>At <a href="https://www.friezenewyork.com//" target="_blank">Frieze Art Fair New York</a> I was passing by the booth of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Galeria-Plan-B/124321567597430" target="_blank">Galeria Plan B</a>, based out of Cluj, Transylvania, Romania as well as Berlin, Germany in the Focus section of the fair.  Galleries in the Focus section are galleries less than ten years old who are debuting works previously unseen in an art-fair context.  I noticed what appeared to be a wooden box with a stack of art books on it.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.artsucks.com/blog/2011/dec11/flux-gala-12-20-11.php"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone" alt="" src="https://www.artsucks.com/blog/2011/dec11/flux/L-20.jpg" width="446" height="579" /></a></p>
<p>At first it reminded me of a sculpture by <a href="https://derickmelander.com/" target="_blank">Derick Melander</a> which I had seen and photographed at the Flux Factory Gala in the Winter of 2011 (<a href="https://www.artsucks.com/blog/2011/dec11/flux-gala-12-20-11.php" target="_blank">read here &#8211; ArtSucks.com</a>).</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/mihai_pop.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3296" alt="mihai_pop" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/mihai_pop.jpg" width="526" height="684" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/mihai_pop.jpg 526w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/mihai_pop-230x300.jpg 230w" sizes="(max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px" /></a></p>
<p>Curator and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Galeria-Plan-B/124321567597430" target="_blank">Galeria Plan B</a> co-founder <strong>Mihai Pop</strong> came over when he noticed I was curious about the piece.  I asked him,&#8221;What exactly I&#8217;m looking at here?&#8221;  He pulled out his smart phone and started scrolling through photos and explaining to me that the Romanian artist <a href="https://www.artnet.com/magazineus/features/nathan/ciprian-muresan-7-20-11.asp" target="_blank">Ciprian Muresan</a> has created a series of prints which you normally would press flat in between boards with weight stacked on top of them.  This is a series of dozens of prints in between boards, stacked in a perfect 90 degree stack, with the books stacked above for ballast.</p>
<p><a href="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ciprian-muresan.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3295" alt="ciprian-muresan" src="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ciprian-muresan.jpg" width="756" height="529" srcset="https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ciprian-muresan.jpg 756w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ciprian-muresan-300x209.jpg 300w, https://artiholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ciprian-muresan-50x35.jpg 50w" sizes="(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px" /></a></p>
<p>Normally the books would be removed, the boards lifted apart and the artwork taken out and framed, but in this case the artist has chosen to leave all of the prints entombed.  You can see what they are through the pictures of the process of making them, but they are not for display.</p>
<p>None of the work was credited so when I asked Mihai the artist&#8217;s name he wrote it on the back of his business card and even drew this great line-art pictogram.</p>
<p>I love high concept art,  but it&#8217;s a good thing some pieces are just beautiful paintings that could be summarized as a &#8220;pretty picture.&#8221; If every piece in every booth in an art fair showing the works of 180 galleries had a larger concept behind it which needed explaining, it would take a month to get through one row.</p>
<p><strong>Frieze runs<a href="https://www.friezenewyork.com/visitors/" target="_blank"> May 10 -13 rain or shine</a>.</strong></p>
