Clio Art Fair has been and still is the main art fair for independent artists in New York and was born from the idea of Founder and Director Alessandro Berni in 2014, of celebrating and promoting emerging artists. It has now fully established itself attracting artists from all walks of life and runs twice every year in March and October. The fair focuses its attention on the kinds of contemporary art and interventions that are being created by independent artists; artists who do not have any exclusive gallery representation in New York.

Clio Art Fair is a unique form of fair because it gives artists the freedom to use different types of material to create their work and they can deviate from the accepted art practice and definitions, unlike in the usual concerns in the art business where there are too many rules on how art should and should not be; after all art is about freedom to express yourself and your thoughts right?

To celebrate or to make famous are the terms that define the Greek word “Clio” and for the second time in 2018, the 7th edition of Clio Art Fair is going to do as per its meaning and norm; to celebrate and make famous works of already affirmed creative minds. The world of art will converge in New York City and this weekend will undoubtedly be an amazing one for artists and art lovers. The four spectacular days from 11th October- 14th October 2018 will be defined by dialogue between artists and collectors, artists and curators, positive energy, colors, and free public viewing. Art lovers will get to see different artworks not forgetting the faces behind them and there will be a chance to buy any piece of art that you will love from paintings, sculptures, digital art and more. Talent from all over the world will all be under one roof.

I am really loving SCOPE’s venue at Moynihan Station, they must have knocked down some walls and gutted the place a bit more than last year because the size of the floor plan seemed massive. Makeshift unvarnished wood steps leading to higher ground, and long benches here and there for sitting (a luxury not easily found at most art fairs).

It was a great show as per usual, and AS I HAD PREDICTED earlier in the week. After taking it all in, I headed out into the night to shoot down to SoHo for Mark DeMaio’s opening at Sacred Gallery. This week really is the Superbowl of art going.

I’ve personally attended the 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013 incarnations of the fair. It’s one of the satellite fairs that didn’t have a permanent home until 2013 and was constantly competing with Pulse as they have very similar vibes, that is until Pulse decided to slide into May and be a part of Frieze Week, thus freeing Scope up to take control of the more serious emerging contemporary art galleries. I watched this fair bounce from Lincoln Center, to a tent on the West Side Highway, and finally to it’s current NY location in the giant post office building Skylight at Moynihan Station next to Madison Square Garden.

Scope is a good dowsing rod for what trends are most likely to be prevalent thought-out all of the art fairs during Armory Arts Week. Mostly pretty good art, there are some major international galleries represented, as well as a lot of NYC talent. Scope is what galleries at Fountain aspire to graduate up to.

Positives: A ton of good work, lots of roaming artists, friendly gallerists. The show has really come into its own since Pulse left. A good mix of low and high brow to appeal to a wide audience. Gets a lot of solid press, and a lot of sales.

Negatives: Some galleries are obviously not yet ready for prime time and stick out like a sore thumb. When you start to notice trends, you will see them repeated and repeated in multiple booths. Location is far from Armory.

Location: Skylight at Moynihan Station 360 West 33rd Street, W 33rd St, New York, NY 10001

New York – Tuesday, February 4, 2014

With just five days into the Kickstarter campaign, founders Maxwell Bogue, Daniel Cowen and Peter Dilworth got over $1.9 million in pledges and undoubtedly surpassed their goal of only $30,000… (you can see our initial report here).<ins>
</ins>

So, what is the 3Doodler you might ask?

The 3Doodler is a pen which heats up plastic sticks and releases them. Once the plastic comes out of the pen, it cools really quickly and solidifies into wherever you lead the pen! This allows you to “draw in 3D”.

Brilliant!

To develop such creative technology, it undeniably takes minds that are programmed to think outside of a box.

So, I got to ask the founders Maxwell, Daniel and Peter exactly how they did it:

What inspired you with the idea to create the 3Doodler pen? How was it birthed?

The idea came about as we frequently use our own 3D printers for rapid prototyping. We wanted to see if the process could be sped up and made “freer” by placing the parts of the 3D printer in a pen form. The first iteration was called the teacup, basically an extruder with a handle. It worked horribly, but it did work. The team then added to this, creating a unique cooling mechanism and evolving to the 3Doodler you see today.

Are you developing any new products? If so, how do you find time to develop them?

Yes, we recently announced some new products at CES. The first is a holder for the pen, which makes storing the 3Doodler in between doodling easier, while also doubling as a moveable platform to allow you to create larger structures with far less hassle. 3Doodler will also be launching the first in a series of changeable nozzles, allowing users to extrude plastic in different shapes and sizes; as well as DoodleBlocks™; silicon molds that can be easily “filled in” with the ABS or PLA plastic from the pen. The molds come in various shapes including stars, numbers, and letters, making it effortless to create perfectly shaped objects.

What were your biggest challenges leading up to the launch of the 3Doodler? And any advice to our readers with product ideas of their own?

Prepare, prepare, prepare. If you think you have something that could get very big, I’d recommend reaching out to media before the launch. The idea that you can just throw it up there and see how it does might work for smaller projects, but for something really big, you need to reach out. Logistics are important as well – you need an idea or a basic plan for how you’re going to deal with the craziness. If you’re thinking of launching on Kickstarter, talking to a Kickstarter veteran is helpful as well. I spoke to Joe Schlesinger (of Arcbotics) a lot about the pitfalls he hit with Kickstarter. You’re going to get a ton of emails. My girlfriend took a few weeks off from work, just to help us answer them. We had some amazing help to strategize and execute the whole campaign. In short: it’s really important to prepare completely – have exactly the right hands and brains on deck. There aren’t really any negative points about our Kickstarter experience – but if we were to give advice for those considering it, we’d say be prepared for the amount of emails and publicity, and try and get back to all enquiries if you can!

Big brother is watching you, in the mirror. Just a day before these pictures were taken I was writing about how the future tech is going to be a lot more clear, and now here I am, at 566 Johnson Ave., in Bushwick, Brooklyn during the Bushwick Open Studios trying on a pair of Google Glass myself, and taking the technology for a test drive.

The first thing people say is “they look like shit!” I agree, they do, but this is the short sighted view of them. The stylish designer sunglasses you currently wear, picture them as Google glasses, now you get the idea. This is a scary near-future we are about to be embracing friends. A future where the time is in the upper right corner of your <del>screen</del> VISION at all times. Where the things you are seeing can be recorded on command, and tweeted to the web on command.

When I first tried them on and they took a minute to get used to.

Artist Ashley Zelenski (One of only about 500 of these prototypes) takes these pictures of me with my camera as I command the glasses to take a picture of her.

My camera back in my own hand, of course Ashley wears it better, I took pictures of her while she took pictures of me with the glasses. Very surreal, and scary.

As you can see in this close-up there is no actual glass to the Google Glass, except for the rectangular chunk that obscures most of your right eye. The rest of it is just frame, camera, and computer. In this shot you can see that she has taken a picture and it’s holding still framed in the screen until she tweets it or scrolls out.

One of the amazing things about the internet, and about YouTube in particular, is that there are a lot of artists and craftsmen out there willing to film “how-to” art tutorials and put them online FOR FREE. Skills that have taken a person decades of trial and error, education, interning, and apprenticing to acquire. The knowledge which you formerly would have to have taken the same long path to achieve is now just a YouTube search away.

If you aren’t looking to spend 100 grand getting your Masters Degree in Fine art, but you do want to have the same (or better) skills as a master craftsman, YouTube Art School is for you. Today’s lesson, how to FABRICATE IRON MAN’S ARMOR:

There is a whole community of people on YouTube building IRON MAN armor right now, sharing tips and tricks, as well as their progress along the way. Anthony Le is by far the cosplay god of IRON MAN building. Are you a skinny nerd who wants to get this kind of attention at a comic convention? Time for you to build an IRON MAN SUIT.

You can see “Master Le” has made a few versions since his original.

Including War Machine.

As well as Iron Patriot.

Jay May makes his helmets out of fiberglass.
Now there are a few approaches you can take to making your Iron Man suit. A lot of people on YouTube go the “Hollywood Prop” route, making it out of light materials made to simulate metal such as fiberglass, plastic, or cardboard.

Jay May also teaches you how to build a rudimentary vacuform table in your garage, to mold your various IRON MAN parts out of plastic instead of fiberglass (which is how the helmets are made because it’s easier to hinge).

YouTube User Jay May has not only designed IRON MAN and <del>War Machine</del> IRON PATRIOT helmets, he has also added the electronics to make the faceplate open automatically while wearing them.

How to use a Pololu chip to make the IRON MAN faceplate open.

Jay May created a tutorial on the mini Maestro 6 channel by Pololu. The computers behind the IRON MAN electronics within the hardware like servos, switches, LED lights and some programming features. Most of Jay May’s videos were uploaded in the past week, you can watch him build the suit in real time by FOLLOWING HIM ON YOUTUBE.

Building a suit shouldn’t cost you a fortune if you are good at improvising. James Bruton built this IRON MAN <del>flux capacitor</del> ARCH REACTOR out of dollar store parts.

IRON MAN’s palm with a hole for the repulsor ray. James has uploaded a series of 5 videos just devoted to sculpting and fabricating IRON MAN’s hand armor

James shows step by step how to 3D print your IRON MAN fingers. This was uploaded a week ago, he probably has a few more videos yet to shoot as he finishes fabricating the fingers.

IRON MAN boots.

So how do these stack up to the real props used in filming? I would say, they need a little battle damage. Show us he’s been in a fight or two, not right out of the box shiny new. Other than that, amazing craftsmanship. If you’ve seen IRON MAN 3 (spoiler alert) these guys have A LOT of new source material to build upon, 43 different suits if I remember correctly? That’s a lot of trips to the dollar store.

Being that it’s a full body suit of future armor it seems like a herculean task, but if this 16-year-old kid can make one in 20 weeks, why can’t you?

Don’t have a computer to 3D render for you? You can always start it with clay.

Boston, Massachusetts – Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Max and Pete put up a kickstarter for their new product from WobbleWorks LLC. yesterday. Just two toy inventors from Boston who created an art meets tech 3D drawing tool, and wanted to open it up to the masses for possible funding- little did they know it was about to go viral. A pen unlike the world has ever seen, which works much like a glue gun, but instead of glue, it feeds through quick drying plastic. It writes like a pen pushing out puff paint, but isn’t limited to painting on a flat surface, it can also draw UP.

When they launched the Kickstarter Campaign on February 19th, they were only looking for $30,000 in funding. One day later and they have already recorded over $806,050 in backer money, coming from over 9,092 backers (at the time this article was published). This project still has 32 days to go on Kickstarter, if it keeps growing at this pace, they could be Kickstarter millionaires, literally overnight.

If you want your own 3Doodler, for $75 you can fund their Kickstarter HERE
