With the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, virtually every in-person event on Earth was cancelled, art fairs among them. Directors had to get creative, inspired to find a way to keep art, hope, and inspiration alive by bringing the show to the public somehow.

A little background: Cube Art Fair is actually a Brussels-based enterprise, happening in the Belgian capital every year for four years now. It mainly focuses on American artists through a high standard of curation, presentation, and organization of a major gallery fair. Through Cube Art Fair, European collectors have a unique change to get familiar with the contemporary art scene in the United States, be it emerging or established.

So how does a Brussels fair end up in New York? The reason would be Gregoire Vogelsang, the man behind Cube, who moved to the Big Apple after managing an art gallery in Belgium for two years.

Now onto the NYC event! To visit Cube Art Fair 2021, you better get your legs ready: the artwork can be viewed on over 100 of the city’s many billboards and kiosks, from the heart of Times Square to the Lower East Side, Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, the Upper East Side and beyond. The whole of Manhattan is Cube Art Fair’s exhibition space! The billboard initiative seems to be part of Cube’s #staycreative campaign, which had already taken place in Brussels and Miami.

What not to miss? The Cube Art Fair definitely recommends seeing “Soft Stories,” one of the artworks appearing on a 12,000-square-feet billboard in Times Square. Created by Canadian photographer Laura Jane Petelko, the open series takes the symbolic inhabitation of animals as the point of departure and goes on to tackle the topics of intimacy, isolation, our relationship with nature.

On the other hand, the sculptural work of the American artist Sam Tufnell tries to reorient our understanding of beauty. His pieces present in the Cube Art Fair exhibition call out the macabre: there is a sculpture of a skull made of noodle soup, for instance.

Among other participating artists are Denmark’s portrait photographer Kenneth Willardt, the French-Mexican photographer Patricia de Solages, and Belgian wildlife photographer Griet Van Malderen.

What is Clio Art Fair? Can you please describe Clio Art Fair to me?

Clio Art Fair is a marketplace that allows independent artists to come into direct contact with insiders without the presence of any intermediary. The project was born when I was living in New York and working as an art critic, I had come into contact with many independent artists capable of producing quality works but who had difficulty finding exhibition spaces and therefore an audience of insiders; this was because we had little time or little experience to devote to our promotion. Starting from this need, we built a tailor-made fair where artists can promote themselves, and where gallery owners will not be present as exhibitors but are invited to participate as spectators.

When did you create the Clio Art Fair? And how many editions have taken place so far?AB: In our first 6 years of life, Clio had 11 editions of the fair and hosted 541 artists representing 5 continents and 35 countries.

What kind of works do you showcase at the fair?

All sorts of artworks from independent artists and collectives from all over the world. Artists have been freed up to use different materials and media and to deviate from accepted art practice definitions. Clio also hosted two special sections: I Want to Go Home, curated by Asya Rotella in March 2019, and A Nest Watching an Avalanche in March 2020.

What makes Clio Art Fair unique?

The logistics services that we are able to make available to our artists is what makes Clio unique. We can offer logistics for the shipment of the works, for installation and also for sale if requested. We have a team of art handlers and very close curators and sellers built over the years. Moreover, during the selection process, our team of curators establishes a dialogue with each artist, preparing in detail the selection and promotion on-site and online of each work.

How did Clio Art Fair grow in the past years?

During this period together, the fair grew exponentially. In the beginning, the fair started on the fifth floor of the Wolf Building on 26th Street, and by 2018, we were organizing our events on street-level storefronts  positioned in the key areas of the city.

Is there a preferred medium of art that has been successful using this method?

It is important for us to have the maximum diversity of media present, site-specific included.

Do you have any particular success stories related to the new types of dialogues that you have created (artists/collectors, artists/curators)?

From 2014 to today we have managed to create a network of returning artists, curators, and collectors. Every edition we meet new friends, people we sometimes hang out with during the year. Our fair is an opportunity for dialogue, sharing, and comparison with people from all over the world.

What are the plans for this year? And how has this pandemic impacted the fair?

Considering the current health situation, we are officially suspending our fair programming for the next 12 months.

Starting with the name chosen for our project, Clio, the muse of history, we have never hidden the Greek and Latin references of our roots. Our culture, although lovingly open to influences from all over the world, which provide for profitable and mutually enriching exchange, continues to have at its core an education that includes the texts of the Old Testament. Our spirituality is experiencing an epochal and ancestral challenge. And these new times have allowed us to dedicate ourselves to the rediscovery of texts that contributed to our education in our youth and have helped us to  rediscover an awareness of how to live in an obligatory period of repose. In biblical times, every seventh year was a “sabbath under the Mosaic law, a time during which the land was allowed to rest. Clio will enter a sabbath of sorts.

When and where will the next editions of Clio Art Fair be taking place?

We have arrived in our seventh year of activity with an awareness that we will be coming to a halt. However, we are ready to announce new developments. Clio, the Manhattan Fair for independent artists, will debut in Venice in June 2021 as a side event of the Biennale, it will then return to NY in September 2021 during the Armory Show and will debut in Los Angeles in February 2022 as a satellite event of Frieze LA. Once this period of emergency is over, we expect a period of freshness, vigor, and additional energy. We are awaiting and planning for an historical awakening.

We are ready to select the artists for our new programming period, and we invite you to submit your works. The application is free. The marketing fee will be waived if you complete the application by December 14, 2020.

With the hope of a profitable and creative sabbatical period, we respect social distancing today, but we will re-hug stronger than ever tomorrow.

For the ninth edition, Asya Rotella (the daughter of the unforgettable master Mimmo Rotella) has been the chief of the curatorial team, and we must tell, she made a great job!

54 international artists from Canada, the United States, China, Japan, and Europe brightened the second weekend of October.

Asya Rotella chooses among many applications the most representative artworks for this era: versatile, powerful, and eclectic.

Sculptures and paintings, installations, big sized pieces exposed to be the joy of all the art lovers.

Clio Art Fair is known to give to the exhibiting artist lots of services such as free studio visits, which for this edition if we can say, has been a very fortunate choice. Clio Art Fair is also the place where you can meet artists that are showcasing their works for their very first time as the talented Thomas Fazio (painting and sculptures). this edition has seen also the debut in the fine art world of the well-known fashion designer Adrienne Landau, who exhibited her painting for the first time ever.

As old friends of Clio we appreciated again Anne Hefer with two romantic oils, Lauralee Franco with her huge canvases; the exuberant photographer Amanda J Armstrong, and, after a few years, we were glad to meet again Anthea Zito, painter and photographer, just at the entrance.

We would like to highlight also the Greek artist Despina Zografos with her very mystical and elaborated multi-layered paperwork; not to mention the cityscape photographer Annette Schreiber, or the magic gouaches by Hyun Jung Ji or Denise Adler‘s complex paintings empowered by the collage technique; the exquisite bronzes by Emilio Diiorio, and a young – very Basquiat-inspired – Keith Josiah.

Clio Art Fair hosted a couple of thousand visitors from Friday 10th to Sunday 13th, and counting the red dots on the walls we can say that the 25% of the artists sold at least one piece, data that definitely confirm that the human size of the show, and the affordable prices of the artworks (from $300 to $20,000), are a winning formula.

Clio Art Fair took place in Chelsea from March 2 – 5, 2017. In its fourth year in succession, the Fair celebrates independent artists that are not represented by galleries and therefore the atmosphere is unique. The two galleries of the fair are curated as one, rather than separate galleries. Clio wants to bond and highlight the efforts of independent artists, and it started off with a bang. The opening night roared with over 1,000 art collectors, lovers, curators, artists, and more. 

With ranging media, styles and techniques, Clio Art Fair is a specifically curated so that different mediums are woven together to create an experience unique to each viewer. Clio is the muse of the history. When Clio sings your name while playing her harp, this means that your name has been admitted to the mental olympus of human history. This fair is born with the intention of launching artists whose names will be written in the history books of tomorrow.

The project, born in 2014, always went on stage the first week of March during the Armory Show. Founded as a satellite fair in which galleries are not admitted to exhibit, the event allows independent artists to come into direct contact with collectors, curators, art critics, art lovers and of course, gallerists. All of this happens in Chelsea, the beating heart of the city’s contemporary art scene. From this year on, Clio Art Fair will occur twice a year and the next show will take place during the last week of October. If in the past years the fair hosted iconic independent artists such as Vito Acconci, Zana Briski and John Edmark. This year in addition to hosting  Nina Berman’s work (Whitney Biennial, New York, 2010), Clio included 70 solid artists who can be considered credible investments for collectors.

Get there before everyone else and become a fist time collector of an artist prior to a contract signing with an important gallery that consequently increases the value of the works. This is one of the main reasons for which a collector should invest in the artists selected by the curatorial board of Clio. The show is also able to feature international artists who have never exhibited in NY. In this way it manages to offer new works and new artists while traditional fairs often repeat the usual names.

Another element that distinguishes Clio art fair is the respect for the architectural spaces where the fair takes place. Clio becomes a real international group show in without the traditional booths, tables and chairs that characterize the selling protocol of other fairs.

Almost a year ago, Artiholics covered the debut of Prayers from Los Angeles (“Prayers“) by interviewing one of the key artists who inspired this multi-disciplinary collaboration—Margaret Garcia. See this clip of last year’s documentation of Prayers. On December 17, 2016, artists and musicians are bringing Prayers back to Casa 0101 Theater.

The venue itself has held a 16-year, thriving relationship with the surrounding community of Boyle Heights in Southern California. Since its founding in 2000 by playwright Josefina Lopez (depicted in the first featured image above), Casa 0101 has held a theater-centric role that gradually expanded and also became known for musical performances and visual art shows.  Theater productions still continue to play a major role in Casa 0101 today while a learning center engages children and adults in classes related to writing, acting/improv, singing, and dancing.  LA Weekly calls Casa 0101 the “Best Theater Serving Its Community” in 2016.

Proceeds from the event’s art and ticket sales will support local charities.  This year, attendees can look forward to artwork by Joe Bravo, Brian Grillo, Jimmy Centenio, Heriberto Luna, Bonnie Lambert, and Margaret Garcia.  Other local artists and performers will also join the celebrations. Notably, Prayers will also seek submissions of “miniature art pieces” from the community to be shown in a special exhibition space within the gallery. The organizers of Prayers want a web of different voices. They emphasize the need to share and support one another. This is the time to defend thy neighbor, to be as positive as possible, and to work together in understanding the values in and outside of your community. Fortunately, we have people who know how this can be done using art materials, sound, and performance. Fortunately for us, Prayers from Los Angeles is not going away– it’s only growing stronger.

The community art show will be catalogued as part of a new book documenting Prayers from Los Angeles.

While there weren’t a lot of media type animation stories (except for The Good Dinosaur trailer which is covered), that didn’t stop this episode from turning into one of the more interesting ones filled will discussions over the roll cartoons play in a child’s development, the nature of copyright in the internet age, why the Surface Pro 4 is a sign that Microsoft is doing more for the creatives of today than Apple… oh and there’s an Emoji movie being developed… which ALSO turned into an interesting discussion over public domain stories! We also field a question about if these two 2D (hand-drawn) animators would/will ever dabble in 3D (computer modeling). Enjoy the last week of “Stephen’s traveling audio” because next week I’ll be back in the office and I’ll be crystal clear!

New York – Monday, September 15th, 2014

The Summer Art Festival at the Waterfall Mansion has been attracting a plethora of personalities since its inception. Artiholics covered the opening back in June when SAF14 opened its doors, and from then onwards the mansion has been exerting a gravitational influx over the NYC art world. That is not particularly surprising: we are talking about a seven level town house in the Upper East Side devoted to the Arts from the ground up.

Stepping into the mansion you will find unique carpets made using ancient Tibetan hand-knotting techniques that have been thoroughly researched and meticulously reproduced by Joseph Carini. Sit and you’ll rest on the sculptural designs of Antonio Pio Saracino, whether reclining in his Hexa lounge chairs or straightening back upright in the slightly flexible steel of his Deer chair. Look around, and you’ll meet a collection of cutting edge contemporary and renowned modern art.

You will be amazed by the shockingly hyperrealistic figural human sculptures brought to life with the help of the most cutting edge Hollywoods special effects technique by artists Jamie Salmon and Jackie K. Seo. Maybe not so coincidentally, Academy Award  winning photographer and filmmaker Zana Briski hangs two of her depictions of nature in the same floor, along side the realism of Robin Antar, an artist who enjoys enlarging consumer brands in rotund marble reproductions.

The accumulation of surprises throughout this UES space has impacted the public with an overall sense of awe that has rapidly communicated and widened the scope of its visitors to an international sphere. The chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Buenos Aires, a board Director from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and international art experts such as Michela Bondardo  and Peter Frank have shared the magnitude of the  impact of the works within this space.

This process of “scope widening” was recently reinforced with a concert -the Summer Musicale- where East and West met harmoniously. Members of the Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center and the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall played traditional Chinese music. They were followed by the Solisti Ensemble and its selection of classical European music including the anonymous Romanza de Amor (for violin and Spanish guitar) and, the once considered unplayable, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35.

It was a frank dialogue between the East and the West. The East represented by the guzhen, a pluck-string instrument (part of the zither family), which is one of the most ancient Chinese musical instruments. The West represented by two violins. One manufactured by Giuseppe Guarnerius “del Gesu” in 1741, – a prime example of Antonio Stradivarius’ school from his Golden Period; and a second violin by J.B. Guadagnini, manufactured in 1751. The value of the violins may be ineffable but their prices were discussed in several circles and estimated altogether over $30M.

The Summer Art Festival continued its “scope widening” with the Summer Tasting, a culinary exclusive event where artisanal award-wining chefs from Korea, Taiwan and India offered samplings of their latest creations.

And finally yet another international audience expansion: a private event for the Unided Nations Foundation and the Caterpillar Foundation aimed at fostering a conversation about innovative partnerships and global development, within the enlightened atmosphere of the SAF14 art collection.

On the way out we grabbed a few quick shots in front of the step and repeat.  It was dark outside so we used a flash.

The trip back to the city was smooth sailing, no traffic.  Art Hamptons is great fun, and a good reason to make the trip to Long Island. Next year I’ll plan ahead and shoot up early and get schedule some time for the beach.

The ArtHamptons Fine Art Fair enjoyed record attendance and sales last year,  it returned for the 7th edition this past Friday through Sunday, with an opening preview on Thursday Night. This year the fair is themed “Escape,” which is right up the alley for an event held in one of New York’s most desired summer retreat destinations.

The first major art event in the Hamptons this summer, organizers expected to see sales figures follow or supersede the record set last year. Artiholics enjoyed an exclusive preview black card access preview of the art and its crowd at the ArtHamptons Black Card First Look and Opening Night Preview.

The fair features 87 National and International Galleries, and art spanning 12 countries. This years show also promised to transport visitors into Korea’s thriving contemporary art scene with a Korean Showcase.

I took a break from painting the 10Subjects and helped my summer assistant Keziah get some flyers printed and bagged up with buttons pressed to give out at the show.  Keziah and my girlfriend Molly and I loaded up the car with gear, put on our Hamptons casual clothes and left the city.

Getting stuck in Long Island traffic didn’t set us back too much.  We arrived at the VIP black card first look an hour into the preview.  There was already a pretty solid crowd of Hamptons elites at work and socializing dressed to the nines, so we did a first lap around the fair to check out the art, the wine, and the overall scene before pulling out the camera and getting to work.

The first person I recognized right next to the central alcohol area was the musician Moby.

In the mood for a summer art fair and some upwardly mobile schmoozing this weekend?  Pack up the family, rent a car, and get ready for a brisk two-hour road trip to Art Hamptons, the official art fair of the Hamptons. 

#ArtHamptons  is the premiere international contemporary & modern art event of the summer. Two fellow Artiholics and I will be in attendance.  We will be leaving the city sometime in the next hour for a hopefully uneventful Summer drive to the fair, in our “Hamptons Casual” attire.  We of course had to google how casual “Hamptons Casual” is.

The festivities kick off with the first look from 5-7pm where we will be photographing and hobnobbing with the black card social elites . Nothing but the best hor d’oeuvres by Cheffe Colette @ The Inn Spot on the Bay, complimentary open wine bars sponsored by Sequoia Grove, sparkling wine & specialty cocktails (courtesy of AVIV 613 VODKA).

After that from 7-9:30pm we will be taking even more pictures with the VIP’s at the opening night preview party, where we will witness thought-provoking performance art, enjoy complimentary wine bars, sparkling wine & specialty cocktails, and tour through 85 prominent gallery displays from 10 countries.

Art Hamptons is open to the general public Friday and Saturday from 11am to 8pm, Sunday, 11am to 6pm.

Harlem, New York City – Thursday, June 26, 2014

Harlem has had its ups and downs throughout its history, to say the least. One of its shining times was the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s, in which African American culture was booming with Southern cuisine, music, art, excitement, and creativity. During the Harlem Renaissance, between 7th avenue and Lenox, there were over 125 entertainment places that operated, which varied from cellars, lounges, speakeasies, cafes, taverns, supper clubs, rib joints, theaters, dance halls, bars and grills. 133rd Street was known known as “Swing Street”, because it housed cabarets, a jazz scene during the Prohibition era, and was named “Jungle Alley” because of “inter-racial mingling” on the street. The area has also seen great sadness stemming from poverty, crime, disease, and ongoing gentrification. Harlem is a cultural epicenter that has given rise to major hip-hop artists such as A$AP Rocky, Immortal Technique, Tupac, P Diddy, and Azealia Banks, to name just a few. There is a strong spiritual component to Harlem, as there are over 400 churches and religious congregations. The area is constantly going through change, turmoil, and celebration. For the past two years, I have lived on 100 West, 141 street, right up the block from the mural of Big L, and the Harlem Hospital which houses a massive glass painting on 135th street and Lenox. I have been a guest of Harlem, but I am about to take part in a new change within it: The Harlem Arts Festival.

The Harlem Arts Festival, is happening in Marcus Garvey Park, a 20.17-acre park, surrounded by flat lawns and playing fields. The park is bounded by 120th Street and 124th Street and by Madison Avenue on its east side. The Festival is the culmination of an extraordinary amount of work  by J.J. El-Far, Neal Ludevig, and Chelsea Golding, three extremely ambitious entrepreneurs who see the potential in Harlem’s art scene as what it once was, and what it can become. This is the festival’s third year, and I have a strong feeling it is going to be bigger and better next year.

The following are just a few of some of the over 40 artists behind the Harlem Arts Festival of 2014.

Zest Collective, a group of movement artists – some from Julliard and others from the Alvin Ailey School. I will be combining the talent of Zest Collective dancers with Andrew Kaminski Art audiovisual projections enhancing their movement, the night of the Opening, at MIST, this Friday, June 27th from 7:30 – 8 pm. In this video, I combine their movement with my video projections. 

There are musical acts such as Isaac Katalay, who sees art as an outlet to promote positivity for humanity.

Paul Tabachneck, whose smooth voice exudes his love and passion for music and his life.

Tiffany Latrice, with her figurative representations juxtaposed with vibrant patterns.

Alice Mizrachi is a working artist in Harlem, and has been prolific with works on canvas and murals.

The schedule for the Festival is here, and it runs from June 27th (the opening night), Saturday, June 28th, and Sunday, June 29th. I hope to see you there!

Cutlog is the first of the Frieze Week Art Fairs to open their doors to the press and VIP’s.  It’s hard to turn down an opportunity to check out the work before anyone else while being treated to a free gourmet brunch.  I can’t stress enough how much fun the perks of art writing can be, and recommend it to any artist who has a knack for words.

This morning the NY edition of the renowned Parisian art fair treated the press to a small talk with it’s founders Bruno Hadjad and NY Director, Guy Reziciner orchestrated by Lainya Magana in a small second floor theater.  It was followed by a brunch of Crepes and Champagne.

After brunch we were given full access to wander around Cutlog, to the 40+ exhibits featuring many first time galleries and curators, 80% of which are international.  Of all the booths 80% were only 80% hung.  This was truly a definition of a first look.

I found parking right out front, but the meter was only good for an hour, so after an hour I had to go out and feed it for another hour.  I felt a bit rushed in looking at the art, also knowing that they weren’t fully set up I didn’t want to get in the way of some booths, so in this article I  really have only documented about half the work in the fair.  If you hate spoilers, this article won’t ruin the show for you.

There are three theaters in the building which during the fair will have lots of scheduled live performances and presentations.

The building, The Clemente, is an old school house in the lower east side that has been converted into a community center, but unlike the schoolhouse that houses Spring/Break, this place is laid out in a weird way.  If you don’t pay attention to the map, you might get lost.

After a hectic week, traipsing from venue to venue, being part of panel talks, exhibiting my paintings during “Art Dubai” week along with interviewing artists and chatting with galleries, I find myself at the last leg of the “Art Dubai” events. This is by far the grandest and most coveted event to date, the one that truly caters for the serious art collector and lover.

Held at the Madinat Jumeirah, the venue that epitomizes the ‘oasis in the desert’, a luxurious beachside resort, where a wealthy and elite clientele flock to dine and ‘be seen’. This venue plays host to one of the highly renowned global and innovative art fairs in the region, an essential gathering of museum directors, curators, art collectors, artistes and art professionals.

Art Dubai, in its 8^th year, has continued to develop, this year offering visitors access to three gallery programs:  Contemporary, Marker and new in 2014, Modern. This new section to Art Dubai included 11 galleries, led by well-known curators and historians Savita Apte, Catherine David, Kristine Khouri and Nada Shabout.

The event, showcasing the work of over 500 artistes spanning from more than 80 plus galleries from over 35 countries, partnered with the Abraaj Group and sponsored by Cartier, was open to public from 19^th to 22^nd March 2014.

The extensive program included commissioned projects and performances, artists’ and curators’ residencies, educational workshops and the unveiling of the works of the winners of the annual Abraaj Group Art Prize by the critically acclaimed Global Art Forum.

The Abraaj Group Art Prize section was curated by Nada Raza, bringing five winning artist’s projects together in a poetic and meaningful way. Each artist was paired with one of the region’s poets or novelists who responded to their work with a piece of creative writing.

One of the firm favorites was Abbas Akhavan’s “Study for a Hanging Garden” which is a floor-based sculptural work that was cast in bronze flowers and leaves on a white sheet looks towards the vegetation native to Iraq. A powerful piece that draws the visitor to the juxtaposition between the inherent natural beauty of an area which has been scarred by war in the modern age.

My invitation to the ‘Art Dubai’ VIP event arrived a couple of weeks before. The pre-selected international clientele list is a strictly invitation only affair and aims to bring together the crème de la crème of renowned curators, artistes and art collectors of the highest caliber.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the unlimited champagne and cocktails establishing this final soiree as the ultimate social event on the art calendar.

Delectable intercontinental nibbles grace the huge array on offer from sushi, pasta, to middle-eastern was enjoyed by the guests whilst mingling with the ‘artsy’ crowd to discuss and share thoughts on the commissions on display.

People from all countries were in attendance and amidst the fashion parade was an interesting diversity: from flowing chiffon evening dresses, fancy hats to short skirts.

Locals (Emiratis) were also present, sashaying elegantly in their traditional long black abayas while the men, pristine in their white thobes, looked sharp to represent their cultural identity.

Many of the galleries hosted a common theme that echoed the region: “key moments in history”. One explored the artistic cross-fertilization between Iran and Dubai and looked closely at links of centuries of trade and migration, currently separated by politics. Another looked at what Kuwait might have been, judging by political and cultural developments from 1942 to 1982. This insight allowed the visitor to experience the development of culture within historic Asia and ironically the positive and negative social effects of migration.

As the sun descended over the clear Arabian Gulf, the elegant crowd drifted to an after-party on the other side of the ‘man made lakes’ to the “Absolute ART Bar”. The complimentary liquor bar entertained with great music ranging from house, techno to pop and entertained the chic crowd who danced and lounged around on plush sofas discussing the future of Art in Dubai.

The night morphed into a networking scene where passionate discussions of topics of “Alternative Futures of Art History between Iran and Dubai” could be heard over the throbbing beats.

While my narrative may paint a picture of the Dubian art lover as a whimsical consort with too much money and not enough depth, this illusion could not be farther from the truth.

Dubai is a melting pot of diversity, it homes the hardworking construction workers to western Bedouin, the curious voyeur and the well traveled.

These individuals spin a dense network of invisible threads linking countries and cultures as almost no one comes from just one place. This blend brings ‘new blood’ to the art table which gives rise to intellectually stimulating prose as the combination of art and thinkers is different from any that you find in the West.

In many cases the intellectual climate in their own countries may prove too stifling or acutely political. In any case, the concept of the clash of civilizations is absurd here, rather the stimulus to expand and explore is endless.

Antonia Carver, Art Dubai’s director, noted that “Successful fairs should take on the characteristics of their host cities, which for Dubai means embracing its cosmopolitanism and bringing in art from parts of the world that aren’t necessarily well-represented on the global circuit.

Dubai’s trading spirit is increasingly entering the cultural sphere”, she said, “making the city a point of exchange for ideas, not just goods. Art Dubai’s development over the past eight years reflects the extraordinary growth of the UAE arts scene and the fair has acted as a catalyst, expediting Dubai’s role as a bona fide cultural hub for the region and beyond”

The events over the past week, together with this glamorous affair, have proved the Art platform in Dubai to be striking, and progressive.

The events have attracted a plethora of nationalities and professionals from the art world to share and cross-pollinate ideas, to brainstorm and create new initiatives.

The potent images and pieces tell the difficult and somewhat controversial message in a non-threatening manner within an environment that is conducive to healthy dialogue. It is in these gatherings where the mentor is introduced to the student, the novice to the art scene and the serious art collector to like-minded lovers.

The art scene in Dubai may be in its incunabulum, but it is this ‘renaissance’ that seems to see tastes and styles growing at an exponential rate. Watch this space, events such as this will develop the city into a respected and developing hub in the Middle East. This is the city from which the artisan of tomorrow will transpire.

On Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Judson Memorial Church hosted the Cult of Creativity, a fundraiser gala for FIGMENT NYC 2014. A free participatory arts festival held annually on Governor’s Island. FIGMENT NYC is June 7-8, 2014. FIGMENT catalyzes and celebrates an abundance of creativity and passion, challenging artists and our communities to find new ways to create, share, think, and dream.

This year, Edgar Olive, a novelist, poet, playwright, and recipient of a Fringe First Award 2009, presented Catherine Burns the very first Figment Award. Burns is The Moth’s longtime Artistic Director and hosts the Peabody Award-winning, The Moth Radio Hour. Burns, who comes from a small town in Alabama, said part of her love for storytelling came from meeting Haper Lee. The novelist had just won the Pulitzer-Prize for her book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee was new in town, and as audacious as it sounds, Burns’ mother was just being cordial in inviting her new neighbor over to her house for dinner. Lee’s tales fueled the young woman’s mind. Thus Burns’ spark for story ignited.

A participatory project by Enki Sumer and Chris Jordan featured a green screen video booth filming people dancing, the feed was then looped and projected onto the walls of the church, framing the stage and the iconic stained glass windows of John La Farge.

The gala featured a buffet and bar, live music and DJs, an arts and services raffle and auction, and an art market of handmade goods by local artists. Entertainment by The Adversary illuminated the stage, as DJ Jago and DJ $mall ¢hange spun throughout the night.

Coinciding with Art Dubai (the Dubai Art fair), ‘Art Night’ was held at one of Dubai’s most impressive venues, DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre). The impressive and sophisticated surroundings added to the prestigious event which was held in the heart of the business and cultural district, surrounded by plush galleries in a modern open-air venue under the stars.

The event allowed the upcoming artesian an opportunity to showcase their work alongside the more established artists in the region who have been housed in one of the fastest emerging art scenes in the world.

The unique location and plethora of exhibition openings enticed the novice appreciator, the curious art lover and the wealthy and cultured collector. All attendees not only enjoyed the visual delights on offer but each also played an integral role in promoting the arts and culture community in Dubai.

I was privileged to be invited to exhibit my work as part of a group exhibition at this event. My series of four black and white mixed media paintings named “Tender Lover of Hate” touches on the issues of identity, conflict, ego and empathy (above).

People meandered through the crowds whilst stopping to take in the ‘artsy’ fashionable atmosphere, partaking of the nibbles laid out by the Ritz Carlton while being entertained by the dulcet tones of live bands.

To the street painter whose pool floor mural came to life under the ‘selfie’ camera to the breath-taking art and sculpture pieces on display, the electric atmosphere of creativity was in awe and appreciation by all attendees.

Ever prevalent in many of the galleries, especially ones that represented artists from the region, was the symbolic branding of the Arabic calligraphy and text, cleverly and subtlety used to elicit an emotive response from the viewer.

From paintings to sculpture to woven carpets and even art made from simple sewing string that spun from building to building like ‘old day’ electric street cabling.

The art scene was truly in its element and Dubai has, once again, placed itself on the map as an art hub that many collectors swarm towards to experience a plethora of styles and artistes.

The Art Beat

Not all the galleries housed beautiful pieces of art, some were there to tell a story. One of the most poignant shows was aired at the Cuadro Fine Art Gallery, who housed the collection “Crash” by Manal AlDowayan. As the gallery states, that it highlights the “plight of Saudi woman teachers who die or get injured in car accidents every year.”

For these women, the combination of low salaries, driving bans, far flung teaching assignments and unsafe roads and drivers have created dangerous and unstable conditions. The accidents are regularly reported in the Saudi newspapers, however, due to laws in the kingdom, the identities of the women are left out.

Their faces are never seen, their names are never mentioned. This raises the question of class and equality in the Saudi Arabia and whether the law seeks to protect or marginalize the victim. The artist asks “how do you mourn the dead if the sufferings have no face or name?”

The art scene here in Dubai continues to astound, amaze and question the boundaries between east and west. It is progressive, modern and continues to grow in strength year on year. The new talent that emerges from these events have strong influential ties on upcoming generations and their forward-thinking, somewhat political themes allows for historical conceptualization of contemporary art in the region.

Art lovers

The event attracts more art lovers and is beginning to breed a new type of art appreciator. While most would be drawn to the visual complexities of the art-piece, the modern appreciator now not only feels empathy for the art-piece but also questions the motives behind it.

This year the first of the Armory Arts Week press previews was for  Spring / Break Art Show in an old school house (called The Old School) in Little Italy. It’s a cool step away from the traditional art fair because it not only focuses on the curator as key, but also has a hard-on for “new media” art, which means you will be seeing either video or projection art in almost every room, and if no video there is usually some auditory component.

Sometimes it is fun to be surprised by art, going into a show without knowing any of the players is like going to a movie not just without any spoilers, but also having no knowledge of the plot or cast. That was my experience last year when I first attended Spring / Break 2013. I was a blank slate. Having never been to the fair previously I was green to the rundown elementary school layout. It seemed disjointed and reminded me of a cross between PS1 and the random dilapidated school buildings turned solo artist exhibitions you see at the Governors Island Art Fair.

This time I settled right in. I knew some of the artists and curators personally ahead of time and was able to more easily identify the work.  It was fun to see how each curator played with this year’s theme for the fair PUBLICPRIVATE.

Entering the building and checking in I wandered into the first room which had an eaten away pillar which reminded me of the box from Frieze except made out of garbage.

Passing through that room I encountered a hallway full of blood illuminations by Jordan Eagles I have been to several Jordan Eagles blood shows when he worked in solid form, but these 13 projectors really filled out the space with a hemo-glow. Curated by Tracy Causey-Jeffery.

Ducking out I spun around when I heard my name called. It was art writer / curator Benjamin Sutton. I had seen some of his install pics on Facebook and instantly recognized the room he curated by the unmistakable ceiling cats by artist Caroline Wells Chandler.

The piece that was his starting point for building the show was this grotesque sculpture “Selfie as a Chocolate Chip Cookie,” also by Caroline.

I climbed up on the radiator to get this shot.

Art by Alex McQulkin which was a collaborative piece she did with her mom.  She commissioned her mom knit a pussy riot mask for her.  She then wore the mask, took pictures of it, and then drew the mask.  This drawing is the end result.

A scientist and a monk reshuffle photos of world events, scientific papers, and diagrams to try to decipher the mystery, and understand what the events of the world are leading toward for it’s strangest sentient being, humankind.

The papers are constantly rearranged as a detective or pathologist would, to see how the data relates to each other, the info comes together to form different shapes, but mostly that of the human body. Performed by Betty T. Kao and Amanda Flowers

After checking out the opening reception for the first ever Clio Art Fair Jamie Martinez from Artefuse and I grabbed a train up to 55th street for the opening night party for The (UN)FAIR. Being press and a media sponsor of the event we buzzed the massive line and shot upstairs.

The first thing you couldn’t help but notice was that the place was packed.

I walked into the masse following a siren’s song and found a woman singing while standing right next to a beautiful Norman Rockwell painting, not the first (or ten thousandth ) thing I expected to see at THE (UN)FAIR but a pleasant surprise. Into the next room where for a few bucks they print your face on a t-shirt onto a baby’s body.

I quickly passed to the next room which had an intricate floor to ceiling vision obscuring sculptural installation.

On the wall beyond hung a few of those meta art world comic strips that Hyperallergic publishes. Into the large room where on the right is an interactive musical installation where you can play a series of instruments by pressing old school arcade buttons.

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream served to you by THE ACTUAL Ben & Jerry. After meeting Jerry, and initially guessing wrong about which ice cream hippy I was talking to I got some cookie dough ice cream (and you just had a taste memory of that flavor). It hit the spot and I ended up coming back a few more times over the course of the night. (Just FYI, THE (UN)FAIR has free unlimited Ben & Jerry’s for the run of the fair).

I ran into fellow Artiholics Jen Wallace, the curationista of THE (UN)FAIR and got a picture with her.

Her partner James Wallace who was acting as greeter to the elevator crowds.

While talking to him one of the poet performers walked into the hallway and started reciting poems for us from memory, and they were great (anyone know who this guy is?)

Last year, the first year of THE (UN)FAIR, the show only occupied half of the entire floor space on the third floor. This year the space was twice as big with two additional new large rooms making way for some large paintings.

As well as an area for performance.

And a massive projection piece, nearby which there are a few large patches of comfy AstroTurf where you can lounge out eating popcorn and ice cream while drinking wine in a small stackable mason jar like the most bizarre Willy Wonka factory picnic.
